To best understand the benefits of open-source based software and formats, it is essential to focus on the larger encompassing issues (in which the benefits of open source projects often shine), rather than devolving into a "side-by-side" comparisons of things like the interface design of a software package or the image quality of a particular video format (where open source often does not provide the "best" solution... and even when it does, it's often not really "the point" with regards to why a project would go FLOSS in the first place).
Some of those "encompassing criteria":
- "Future-proofing" Open source embraces change, and leaves options open for an institution. This in constrast to the typical terms of service of proprietary platforms that typically include phrases like:
YouTube may, in its sole discretion, modify or revise these Terms of Service and policies at any time, and you agree to be bound by such modifications or revisions. Nothing in this Agreement shall be deemed to confer any third-party rights or benefits. [1]
- Creating spaces for truly two way collaboration among partners, avoiding "lock-in" to particular individuals (say a developer) or a particular format or technology.
- Creating projects where participation is possible, and its terms renegotiable, on every level.
